EAGLE SCOUT AWARDS

On Wednesday, November 16th, the following Eagle Scouts were presented with their Good Citizenship awards at Fuller-Taylor Post 915, the American Legion. Sadly, many boys were not able to be present for the presentation. Each Scout described their Eagle Scout project when they came forward to receive their award.

Tue. Oct. 26: Voiture 895 of the 40 et 8 Prom at Hannibal Post 1552 - 8:00 PM. All voyageurs are urged to attend. We need more participation NOW.

Mon. Nov. 1: Department Commander Jim Troiola makes his official visit to Oswego County. Check with your Post for dinner tickets. Social hour at 6:00 PM; dinner at 7:00 PM at Cleveland Post 858, Route 49 in Cleveland. Price is $12.00 each.

Sat. Nov. 6: Oswego County Auxiliary meets at Parish Unit 601, Route 69A, Parish at 10:00 AM. President Elaine Johnson presides.

Wed. Nov. 17: Oswego County Legion meets at Central Square Post 915 at 7:00 PM for the Annual Boy Scout Awards presentation. ALL Legionnaires are expected to attend. There will be refreshments for the scouts and parents. Regular county meeting will follow at 8:00 PM with Commander Palmer in charge.

Boy Scouts given highest Legion honor

Joining a distinguished list that includes Gen. John J. Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, Henry Ford, Bob Hope, J. Edgar Hoover, Dr. Jonas Salk, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Gen. David Petraeus, the Boy Scouts of America today received the highest commendation given by the nation's largest veterans organization.

Celebrating 100 years of commitment to youth this year, the Boy Scouts organization was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by The American Legion. The Boy Scouts was chartered by Chicago publisher W.D. Boyce on Feb. 8, 1910, and the Legion has been by its side for much of the way.

In presenting the Distinguished Service Medal to Jim Terry, assistant chief scout executive and chief financial officer for the Boy Scouts organization, National Commander Clarence E. Hill said, "Today, more than 2,700 Scouting units serving more than 71,000 young people are chartered by American Legion posts, American Legion Auxiliary units and Sons of The American Legion squadrons.

"In 2009, service projects were conducted by more than 2.8million youth members and more than 1.1 million volunteers. Nearly 37 million service hours were given by members of this great organization last year in projects ranging from community clean-ups to military appreciation. Simply put, the Scouts stand for God, country and service."

The American Legion has officially supported the Boy Scouts since the first national convention in 1919, making it the first youth activity recognized by Legionnaires. The Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The organization is composed of 2.7 million youth members between the ages of 7 and 20, 1.1 million volunteers and nearly 300 local councils throughout the United States and its territories.

In addition to chartering scouting units, each year The American Legion provides a scholarship of $10,000 to the Eagle Scout of the Year, and scholarships of $2,500 to each of three runner-up candidates.

The award was presented on the first day of The American Legion's 92nd National Convention in Milwaukee, Wis., before an audience of nearly 5,000 delegates.
