The National Salute to Veteran Patients program encourages all Americans to visit and volunteer at VA medical centers and to send letters of thanks or valentines to those who have protected our nation. This year's national salute is Feb. 12-18. Last year, more than 328,000 valentines were received at VA medical centers, and 21,330 people visited nearly 70,000 veteran patients. VA Caregivers Support Line Celebrates First Anniversary

Program Received More Than 25,000 Calls in First Year

On Feb. 1, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will mark the one-year anniversary of the toll-free National VA Caregiver Support Line, 1-855-260-3274. The support line’s dedicated staff has helped more than 25,000 Veterans, family members and Caregivers connect to resources and receive access to services they have earned.

“VA recognizes the importance of Caregivers to our Veterans’ health and well being. We also recognize the sacrifices the daily care of their beloved Veteran requires,” said VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki. “It is the care and commitment of Caregivers that allows Veterans with chronic illnesses or severe injuries to remain in the homes they defended, surrounded by the loved ones they hold dear. I am proud we have been able to help so many Caregivers in this first year of the support line’s operation.”

Since the program began, the Caregiver Support Line has received more than 25,000 calls and email queries through VA’s main page www.va.gov. Local Caregiver Support Coordinators at each VA medical center have responded to more than 8,000 referrals. Callers to the support line are spouses, children, other family members and friends of Veterans as well as Veterans themselves. Caregiver Support Line responders listen to the callers and assess how best to offer support, appropriate direction, and connection to needed resources.

Responders serve as a resource for Caregivers by providing guidance, education on VA programs and benefits, information on community resources and emotional support through brief supportive counseling, if needed. The support line responders can also connect callers to VA’s other support lines such as the VA Veteran Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255) and Coaching Into Care Line (1-888-823-7458) when these lines better meet the callers needs.

“Caregivers play such a critical role in the lives of our nation’s Veterans, often at great cost to themselves. VA recognizes this sacrifice and the Caregiver Support Line is just one way we seek to support Caregivers,” said Deborah Amdur, VA’s Chief Consultant for Care Management and Social Work.

“Caregivers often give so much of themselves and the social workers on the support line recognize this. They understand the challenges faced by Caregivers and are able to offer a listening ear, education and connection with needed resources.”

If a Caregiver or Veteran who calls the line needs additional guidance, a referral is made to their local Caregiver Support Coordinator, located at every VA medical center, who is the key contact for Caregivers at VA and an expert in VA and community programs available to Veterans and their Family Caregivers.

Veterans and Caregivers can reach the VA Caregiver Support Line toll free at 855-260-3274. Operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., ET, and 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., ET on Saturdays. VA also features a Web page, www.caregiver.va.gov, with general information on other Caregiver support programs available through VA and the community.

Family Support Network

The American Legion’s Family Support Network stands ready to assist those families affected by activation and deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Families and military personnel can contact the Family Support Network in one of two ways: the toll-free national hotline 1-800-504-4098 or by completing the electronic application located at http://www.legion.org/fsn. The National Headquarters of The American Legion received 2,158 requests during 2011.

Oratorical

Department oratorical contests begin Thursday, January 5, 2012. These contests will culminate by determining which one single contestant will proudly represent each department at the 75th Oratorical Contest National Finals in Indianapolis on April 13-15, 2012.

Junior Shooting Sports Program

The deadline to order target sets for the 2012 American Legion Junior Shooting Sports National Tournament is January 10, 2012. Fired target sets must then be returned by February 1, 2012.

American Legion Baseball

Online registration for the 2012 American Legion baseball season began on January 1^st, signaling the start of this new season that will conclude in August at the ALB World Series in Shelby, North Carolina.

The ACY baseball staff is attending the annual American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) conference in Anaheim, California, from January 5^th – 8^thfor information gathering and sharing. An American Legion baseball information booth will be staffed by several American Legion baseball coaches also attending from across the nation.

On January 7^th while in Anaheim, the ACY baseball staff is attending a USA Baseball youth committee meeting, followed by attendance to a USA Baseball Board of Directors meeting on January 8^th.

The current 2012 membership total is 1,695,520, which is 81% of the 2012 goal. Next target date is January 19^th (80%).

DMS Program

The following is the status of the DMS program for the 2012 Membership Year:

The second mailing campaign of the 2012 Membership Year was completed on November 11, 2011.

On-Line Renewal Activity

2012 Membership Year On-Line Renewals (since 7/1/11) -- 120,750. Of that number 55% are DMS acquired and the remaining 45% is traditional. Interesting fact is that 36% are three year and less members with 74% being DMS and the remaining 26% traditional of that cohort of members.

National Emergency Fund

Between December 21-January 5, 2012, 28 applications have been processed totaling $20,000.

Sons of The American Legion

The Sons of The American Legion membership for 2012 currently stands at 189,621 members or 54.4 % on January 5, 2012. At present, the Sons are running 4,650 members ahead of this same date last year. The second Sons membership renewal postcard mailing will be made later in January subsequent to the January membership target date. We expect to mail approximately 95,000 postcards for this mailing. The next Sons membership target date is January 19th, which will be the 60% membership goal

Over 304,000 plus SAL National Update newsletters have been mailed just prior to Christmas and is being received by Sons members this past week. The SAL web site (www.legion.org/sons) is up and running. Modifications and the posting of articles of information are being made daily.

1. Video Streaming

Public relations A/V has received new TriCaster hardware designed to facilitate future Internet streaming projects. In addition to those events which streamed live last year, 2012 events will also include the Spring and Fall meetings at National Headquarters.

2. 2012 Commander’s PR Award

Recipient has accepted and is gratified to receive the award in Washington Feb. 29. Will be sending video, photos and promotional kit in advance.

3. Operation Comfort Warriors

As of today, $750, 773 has been raised for Operation Comfort Warriors since its inception in December 2008. More than $550,000 has been spent or committed to purchases to improve the morale, welfare and recreation of wounded, injured or ill warriors. Next week, PR staff will be visiting wounded warriors and distributing donations at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in the Department of Washington. Included in the donations are Amazon giftcards for each of the wounded warriors, air rifle equipment, bicycles, yoga equipment and golf carts to transport outpatients from the barracks to the medical center.

Breaking Stories During the Week:

· The Philadelphia Inquirer published a piece by Catharine Hill, president of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., titled, “Colleges owe much to veterans.” She wrote, “If we commit to working together to identify a pool of veteran candidates and place them in the most appropriate schools, perhaps we can do our part to pay our debt to the young men and women who have borne the burden of the United States' wars.”

· In a national wire story headlined, “Panetta: Smaller military means extra risk,” reporter Robert Burns of the Associated Press wrote, “President Barack Obama vowed Thursday the United States will maintain the best-equipped military in history despite deep and looming defense budget cuts, but Pentagon leaders acknowledged the changes present additional risk.”

· National Guard (In Federal Status) and Reserve Mobilized as of September 13, 2011-- This week the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard announced a decrease in activated reservists. The net collective result is 1,312 fewer reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 66,218; Navy Reserve, 4,410; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 9,683; Marine Corps Reserve, 5,141, and the Coast Guard Reserve, 761. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been activated to 86,213, including both units and individual augmentees.

If the American people are stupid enough to re-elect this clown, then they deserve what they will get.
Today I was incensed at the conclusion of a traditional Serbian-Orthodox funeral for my beloved 85 year old uncle, Daniel Martich, who proudly served in the US Army during The Korean Conflict.

During the committal service at a Pittsburgh cemetery the local military detachment performed their ritual, then folded and presented the American Flag to my aunt.

As I'm sure you have witnessed during military funerals, a soldier bends to one knee and recites a scripted message to a surviving relative that begins "On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation, I wish to present you with this flag in appreciation for your husband's service." However, today the dialogue was "On behalf of the Secretary of Defense and a grateful nation..." After the service I approached the soldier who presented the flag to my aunt to inquire about the change in language.

His response was "The White House notified all military funeral service detachments to immediately 'remove 'the President' and insert 'the Secretary of Defense'".

I couldn't believe what I heard and the soldier smiled and said "You can draw your own conclusion sir but that was the order."

He, too, was ashamed of what he was required to say.

This president has taken off the gloves.

My only response to this endless cesspool of Anti-American rhetoric dripping from his mouth is to borrow a phrase (with one minor change) uttered by another temporary Washington resident living in government housing: "Today for the first time in my adult life I was ASHAMED of my country."

I did not serve in the military but my love of country parallels that of people like my late uncle who bled Red, White and Blue.

As a second generation Serbian-American who's heritage produced many patriotic military men and women who fought for freedom both in The United States as well as in the former Yugoslavia (most recently in Kosovo against the slaughter of Serbs by Muslim extremists), I implore you to make the American people aware of this little-known or, at least, publicly acknowledged fact.

May God Bless you and your family during these difficult times.

Your voice of reason is a welcome change from the insanity plastered across the country by the liberal media.

Keep up the great work and thank you for your service to our country.

Approximately 60 percent of American Legion posts submit annual reports to National Headquarters quantifying local activities that support the organization's mission and values. Across the country and beyond, the Legion helps hundreds of thousands of veterans, military families, schools and young people. The report presents that involvement in terms of dollars raised, volunteer hours put in, events coordinated and people affected.

A snapshot of that activity appears in the 2011 Consolidated Post Report, recently summarized by the Legion's Internal Affairs Division. "Every year, this report shows just how important The American Legion family is to local communities," immediate Past American Legion National Commander Jimmie L. Foster said. "Even with only 60 percent of posts reporting, it's a very impressive set of numbers."

American Legion posts are encouraged to submit their Consolidated Post Reports online using myLegion.org. Paper report forms are mailed annually to departments' headquarters and distributed to local posts for completion.

Highlights of the 2011 American Legion Consolidated Post Report include:

After a six-year relationship, Team Johnson Motorsports and The American Legion parted way Dec. 31 after their contract expired.

“It has been a wonderful experience,” said Jerick Johnson, driver for the iconic American Legion/David Law Firm 76 Freedom Car. “Regardless where racing takes me, I will always cherish my years driving the Freedom Car.

“We at Team Johnson Motorsports have been privileged to carry The American Legion emblem on our race cars across the country and humbled by the grassroots support bestowed us by the Legion family from California to Virginia, Minnesota to Florida, and the many states between. It has been an awesome ride. I will miss it. We all will miss it.”
The decision to not ink a new contract was amicable and mutual, said car owner Jack Johnson.

“It takes money to field a competitive race car – a lot of money,” Johnson said. “Our contract with The American Legion stipulated that we could use The American Legion Emblem for marketing purposes but that we would receive no other financial support from the national organization. Unfortunately, we were not able to continue to field a competitive race team within the confines of the contract.”

The race team and national Legion leadership agreed it was untenable to provide direct financial support to the Legion Racing program.

“We are the world’s largest veterans organization,” said Jack Querfeld, director of The American Legion Internal Affairs Division. “Our primary focus and responsibility is to support our nation’s veterans and their families.

“Jerick Johnson has been a powerful spokesman for The American Legion, and the racing program has introduced the Legion to thousands of race fans across the country. But from the beginning we knew we could not justify direct financial support to a racing program when our resources must focus on veterans’ issues.”

The Johnsons were perfect American Legion spokespersons, Querfeld said. “Jack is a Legionnaire, his wife, Debby, is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Jerick is a Sons of The American Legion member,” he said. “They personify what is great about America and understand the challenges facing veterans. They have enthusiastically carried the Legion message to scores of communities and thousands of race fans across the country – for which we will forever be grateful.”

Team Johnson Motorsports is not leaving racing. Jerick Johnson will drive the POW/MIA Freedom Car during the 2012 season. Johnson is scheduled to compete in the 2012 Speedfest Jan. 27-29 at Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, Ga.

Team Johnson Motorsports will continue to serve veterans across the country with their POW/MIA Freedom Car National Tour.

“We have received a great amount of enthusiasm from our veteran supporters across the country and are excited to bring a new twist to the Freedom Car,” Jack Johnson said. “The POW/MIA cause is something that is very important to all veterans, and we will continue to show our support for those that have served our country – including Legion members – by carrying the POW/MIA logo on all of our race cars.”

The Johnsons also are taking applications for their startup school, Stock Car Tech, a nine-month hands-on curriculum to introduce students to the racing world and to give them skills to work for a race team and/or build, repair or setup their own race car.

The new 20,000 sq. ft. facility will give participants the equipment and ability to work hand-in-hand with the Team Johnson Motorsports Freedom Cars, said Jerick Johnson, who has also committed to helping young drivers pursue their careers in racing by giving driver development opportunities within Stock Car Tech.

NOTICE:

It was brought to my attention that there are a couple of mistakes in the January Oswego County American Legion newsletter. It has to do with district meetings and the correct information is below:

Correction number 1: Feb. 12, 2012 is 5th District meeting in Onondaga County at Cicero Post 787. Sons of Legion meet at noon; Legion membership meeting is at 1:30 PM and regular meeting at 2 PM.

(It was mistakenly listed as Feb. 6 at Croghan Post 1663. That is the District Commander's Visitation to Lewis County.)

Correction number 2: The 5th District meeting listed for April was listed as being held on Sunday April 8th. It was noted that this is Easter Sunday so it was rescheduled for Sunday April 15th. It will be held in Oswego County at Fuller-Taylor Post 915 in Central Square, NY at the regular times.

Hope this clears matters up for everyone. Sorry about the confusion.

Columbine Student's father 12 years later

Guess our national leaders didn't expect this, hmm? On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.

They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness...

The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.

"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent.

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

> Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
> Your words are empty air.
> You've stripped away our heritage,
> You've outlawed simple prayer.
> Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
> And precious children die
> You seek for answers everywhere,

Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge...Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!

Walk For Veterans Walk-A-Thon
"They Marched for Us, Let’s Walk For Them"

The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion in New York State are proud to announce the 4th Annual Walk-A-Thon to benefit the 13 Veterans Administrative Medical Centers in New York State, the 5 New York State Veterans Homes, the Fisher House in Albany, New York and help support the need of veterans returning from areas of conflict from across the globe. The Walk-A-Thon will take place on April 14, 2012, in a city near you.

This Walk-A-thon will benefit the Veterans residing at each of these facilities, assist in their care and meet some of the needs of their family members while they are visiting. These funds will help voluntary service departments purchase personal hygiene products, board games, home computers, DVD’s, coffee makers, movies passes, tickets to sporting events, phone cards, along with renovating and upgrading recreation and therapy equipment. Funds are always needed for the upkeep of the Fisher House. The Fisher House provides veterans families a place to stay at no charge while their loved ones are receiving medical care at Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center. The New York State Veterans Homes are assisted living homes for veterans. Recreational and social donations are always welcomed and improve the quality of life for our Veterans residing there.

With the amount of veterans returning from active duty from the conflicts in the Middle East these young men and women need the services provided at our VAMC’s in New York State and their families need help adjusting to their loved ones medical condition suffered in our time of war. Let’s not forget our aging veterans who have served our country in the past. They with no doubt deserve the best in recreational and socialization programs that can be offered to them.

This Walk-A-thon will be held all across New York State on April 14, 2012. It will take place in all the major metropolitan areas as well as other cities and towns in New York State. The public is encouraged to participate. Please seek out the support of community organizations such as Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, local 4 H organizations, college fraternities and sororities for example. We have a goal of raising at least $120,000.00 during this day which can be obtained by pledges, donations from individuals and business. With your support and love for our country this figure can easily be doubled. All donations and pledges need to be sent to: Detachment of New York Sons of the American Legion, 112 State Street, Suite 1300, Albany, New York 12207. Please make out all checks payable to Detachment of New York Sons of The American Legion and put in the memo line Walk-A-Thon.

Just a quick reminder of the November 4 episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition will feature a new home built for the Sgt. Allen Hill family. Sgt. Hill is a combat disabled veteran and a member of The American Legion. Just prior to the reveal of his new home he was extremely nervous and wasn’t certain he could appear before everyone who had a hand in providing his family a new home….that is until he was told The Kansas American Legion Riders were there to escort and support him. The KS American Legion Riders, many of whom assisted in the build, are expected to be featured at the beginning and end of the program.

This program airs on Friday, November 4, 2011 on ABC network at 8 PM eastern time, 7 PM central time.

Each year, the Oswego County American Legion presents a program of awarding Eagle Scout Awards to the scouts who have acquired this level of scouting. Good Citizenship medals and Certificates are presented to each one. These are a few pictures from past year's programs.

After the presentations, there are refreshments which usually include cake and soda and coffee. Parents are urged to attend and if their son can't be present, his award will be presented to either a parent or a scout representative.

COMMANDER'S VISIT

Department Commander W. Michael Bowen made his official visitation to Oswego County on Monday, October 17th, 2011. Traveling with the New York Commander of The American Legion was NY Auxiliary President Ann Geer and Detachment Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Dr. Greg K. Gibbs.

Commander Bowen is a lifelong resident of Waterloo, NY. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1967 at the age of 17. He served from 1967 until 1971 in Europe and the Mediterranean area. He is a 42-year life member of Warner-Van Riper Post 435, Waterloo, NY.

He is self-employed and the owner of a local general contracting business. Mike and his wife Patty have four children: Jonathan, Brandi, Lori, and Jenny Sue, one grandchild Brandan Michael and three step grandchildren: Alex, Ian, and Brett.

Commander Bowen has served as Commander of Warner-Van Riper Post 435, Commander of Seneca County, Commander of the 7th District, Department Vice Commander and Membership Chairman. At the national level, he served as Consultant to the National Membership and Post Activities Committee.

Auxiliary President Ann Geer

Ann joined Joyce-Bell Unit 578 in Otsego County in 1981 through the eligibility of her husband Stephen, a Viet Nam era veteran. She went on to serve as the Unit President for 6 years.

Ann was elected Otsego County President and served in that capacity from 1988 to 1990, and again in 1994 through 1996.

At the District level, Ann served as District Membership Chairman, District Chaplain and Color Guard captain. In 2003 she was elected Sixth District President.

In 2005 Ann chaired the Department Education Committee, receiving the National Award for Outstanding Department Education Program and in 2007 she was asked to chair the National Security Committee receiving the National Award that year for the Outstanding Department National Security Program.

Ann has lived in Unadilla for 30 years and is active in the community. She is a founding member of the Recreation Commission, which established a community athletic field. She has two grown children: Peter, a computer program designer residing in Brockport, and David, an artist living in Unadilla.

Dr. Greg K. Gibbs

Dr. Greg K. Gibbs is a twelve year member of the Hamburg Squadron #527 in Erie County, NY. Doc gets his eligibility through his deceased father Richard C. Gibbs who served honorably in the US Marine Corps during the World War II Pacific Campaign, serving in combat on Iwo Jima, Tinian and Saipan.

Greg has served at the squadron level including a four-year stint as Commander and served as Erie County Commander for one term and as 8th District Commander for two years. He helped begin the District 7 & 8 Sons ROTC Scholarship Award named in memoriam for Past Eighth District Commander William P. O'Connell. The scholarchip is now in its sixth year.

At the Detachment level, Gibbs has served as the Chairman of the Legislative Commission helping to organize On-the-Hill Days in Albany and Washington and as a Member of the Training and Development Committee, while also serving as the Sons VAVS Representative for the VA Hospital in Buffalo. Doc received a national award for Outstanding Service from National Commander Paul Morin.

A 2011 graduate of American Legion College, he was one of the first Sons to attend. Doc is supported by his wife Pam and his two children, Kristen and Kirt. Kristen in active in the local Auxiliary and Kirt is also a Sons member. In his daily life, he is employed as a professor at St. Bonaventure University in Western New York and holds a Ph.D. degree.

Master of Ceremonies was past County Commander James R. Ellis, currently serving as 5th District American Legion Sergeant-at-Arms. He led those present in a salute to the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer was given and the POW/MIA remembrance prayer was read. After the introduction of the head table, dinner was served.

Chairman of the day's activities was John Young, Oswego County Vice Commander.

Programs were produced by past County Commander David Potter II.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship

Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. In 2010, 10 $20,000 scholarships and 88 $1,000 scholarships were awarded.

Eligibility
Scholarships are restricted to high school juniors who complete either a Boys State or Girls State program and are a direct descendant - i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. - or a legally adopted child of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership.

Samsung scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service and financial need. Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration.

Deadline
Usually, applications are submitted to program staff upon participants' arrival at Boys State or Girls State.

Nine students to receive $20k Samsung
American Legion Scholarships

        INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 13, 2011) -- The American Legion National Committee on Education recently selected nine students for the 2011 Samsung American Legion Scholarship. Each student will receive a $20,000 scholarship for undergraduate studies.

        The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available to high school juniors who participate in and complete the Boys State or Girls State programs and are direct descendants (or legally adopted children) of wartime veterans eligible for American Legion membership. Students who qualify for and are interested in the Samsung Scholarship must submit a completed application to program staff upon their arrival to Boys State or Girls State.

     Recipients of the scholarship must use the funds for undergraduate studies (e.g., room and board, tuition and books), and each applicant is selected according to his or her school and community activities, academic record and financial need.

        To date, the scholarship has awarded more than $4 million to nearly 1,500 applicants, making it the largest college scholarship the Legion awards.

Ann Geer has selected as her project the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA), a not-for-profit organization that helps make a difference in the lives of families that have a child who is in need of a life-saving transplant. COTA has been in existence for more than 25 years, and all funds will be used to assist children in New York State.

COTA never takes a fee for its services. All funds raised are deposited in a trust account that is for the benefit of the child. Expenses are submitted by the child's family and paid within two weeks. The trust remains with the child throughout his lifetime. It does not stop when the child turns 21. It will always be there to assist with ongoing treatment, medical costs and associated expenses.

COTA volunteers remain with the family throughout the transplant process and continue to support the child and family after the surgery.

American Education Week

is Nov. 13-19

The American Legion encourages posts to participate in the celebration of the National Education Association's (NEA) 90th American Education Week, Nov. 13-19. The American Legion has a commitment to education, believing a strong education program is vital to instill a sense of personal obligation and responsibility in today's youth. The Legion highlights in its electronic 2011 American Education Week brochure many ways posts can support the NEA's annual tagline, "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility." Furthermore, posts are encouraged to share the brochure with schools, educators and prospective volunteers within their communities.

The following are a few examples of ways Legion posts can support American Education Week:

Decorate store windows with Americanism and Legion youth program items.

Provide a speaker and a program for the students on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Honor educators by hosting a banquet or social hour, or by presenting a certificate of appreciation.

Exhibit student work and special projects within the post.

Sponsor a poster, art and essay contest for students.

Volunteer during a school's open house and distribute American Legion youth materials.

Write news releases on activities taking place within the community during education week.

Announce American Education Week through posters, street banners and billboards.

5th DISTRICT MEETING

Fall Colors on the way to Lowville

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2011:

The 5trh District meeting of The American Legion was held at Lowville Fire Hall in Lowville at 2:00 PM. We had 4 representatives from Oswego County which included the 5th District Sergeant-At-Arms James Ellis. The other three attendees were all past 5th District Commanders: David Walker, Tom Brown and Delos Rowlee.

Jim was at the door for county sign-in and raffle ticket sales. There was a pretty good turn-out for the beautiful fall day and temps in the 70's or more with not a cloud in the sky.

Ken Hurst and Bob Albro from Liverpool Post 188 signed in as others awaited their turns.

Some district directories were handed out but they ran out before even the past district commanders had a copy. This seems to happen every year lately and must be due to the limited number of booklets they make up. Just the information that each county should have and yet they can't print up enough to go around. It's not that the district is broke!!! They have the money!!! (P.S. This is my personal opinion and since I deal with information all the time, I get somewhat perturbed when this happens time and time again. Delos Rowlee)

One bright note on the meeting was that each chairman gave their report from the dais with the microphone so they could be heard and seen which is a big PLUS! This was brought up at the organizational meeting earlier.

There were some guest speakers at the beginning of the meeting. Sandra Crain, VAVS chairman at the Syracuse VA Hospital; Jayne Fust, chairman of the Holiday Gift Shop at the VA Hospital. There was one other guest speaker.

The VAVS is always looking for donations of time and/or money for their programs and the Holiday Gift Shop is a very popular program at the VA where patients may pick out gifts for their families and they are packed and shipped to their families at no charge. The American Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion pay all the postage. So it is very important to keep this program funded to operate smoothly.

Volunteers are sought for Sunday, December 4, Monday December 5, and Tuesday December 6 from 8 AM until all are served. There is coffee and donuts for volunteers as well as lunch vouchers on Monday and Tuesday for all volunteers. Please plan on helping out with this worthy program.

All proceeds from this raffle are used to present a cash present to veterans in local nursing homes in our annual "Valentines For Veterans" program wherein a valentine card is presented to each veteran with cash enclosed in appreciation of their service in the armed forces

of the United States.

Baseball excitement didn't stop for Cleveland County residents after hosting the 2011 American Legion World Series and reaching a record total paid-attendance crowd of more than 86,000, beating the record established 75 years ago in Spartansburg, S.C.

The Cleveland County American Legion World Series Baseball, Inc., recently announced that it was awarded a $170,000 grant from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF). The grant will be used toward the upgrade and expansion of field lighting at Keeter Stadium. And because of the strong partnership between BTF and Musco Lighting, Inc. - a leader in the sports lighting industry - the field lighting equipment will be provided at a discount.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, not only for our program, but for the children who play the game," said Eddie Holbrook, co-chairman of the Shelby Baseball World Series Committee. "We are very thankful to the Baseball Tomorrow Fund and Musco Lighting, Inc., and look forward to a lasting partnership."

Dina Neeley, Musco Field Sales representative added, "What an honor it was for Musco Sports Lighting to be a part of this project. It was truly inspiring to watch those who worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality. It doesn't get any better than this!"

The Baseball Tomorrow Fund promotes the growth of youth baseball and softball throughout the world by awarding grants. The grants are used for field renovations and construction projects, equipment and uniform purchases, coaches training material and other selected program expenses. And due to its formation by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association 12 years ago, BTF has awarded more than 550 grants totaling nearly $20 million to non-profit and tax-exempt organizations in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Caribbean, Europe and Asia. More importantly, nearly 225,000 youth players have benefited from programs and facilities supported by BTF.

"On behalf of the Baseball Tomorrow Fund and Musco Lighting, Inc., we thank Cleveland County ALWS Baseball, Inc., for its commitment to youth baseball and softball in the community. We are pleased to support the continued growth of this program," said Cathy Bradley, executive director of Baseball Tomorrow Fund.
The Baseball Tomorrow Fund receives approximately 500 applications yearly and awards grants on a quarterly basis after a selective review process.

Additionally, Musco Lighting of Oskaloosa, Iowa, has specialized in the design and manufacture of systems for lighting recreation and athletic fields since 1976 and is recognized as a world-class leader in sports lighting with lighting systems installed worldwide. Musco works with organizations such as Amateur Softball Association, Babe Ruth League, England and Wales Cricket Board, Little League Baseball®, Major League Baseball, NASCAR and the NBA, and has played a key role in developing guidelines for safe, efficient sports facilities.

DEPARTMENT VISITATION

NEW YORK DIGNITARIES from the American Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion will be making their visitation to Oswego County on Monday, October 17th. A luncheon will be offered by the Oswego American Legion Auxiliary Unit 268 at noontime, local veterans' venues will be visited as time permits.

The evening festivities will get under way with a social hour at 6 PM at Prior Stock Post 1552, Hannibal, NY. A roast beef/ham dinner will follow at 7 PM honoring the Legion Family officers. The following are expected to be present:
